Aminu Maryam

IMG-20170511-WA0022

Aminu Maryam is one of the young graphic designers in Nigeria. She is also a rapper and an aspiring Basketball player. Being a female who is making waves in this different areas I had to interview her. She is one of my favorite graphic designers and I know as you read you will love her work as much as I do.

INTERVIEW

What is your full name and what do you do?

My Full name is Aminu Maryam, I’m a graphics designer, Rapper, and An aspiring Basketball Player.

What inspired you to be a graphics designer?

A while ago I wanted to drop a cover for a song that I did. And I wanted a really good artwork for it, in my mind, I’m like who do I even know that does this type of stuff? so I decided to learn it. So I started and I realize I wasn’t half bad. My brother was who really taught me all I know. He’s an amazing artist and we are close so it was easy for me to learn it.

So basically your music led you to graphics designing?

Yes, it did. And I get better by every single piece I make.

How long have you been rapping?

It has been 5 years now. Mostly freestyle ciphers for fun cause I never had enough time to put out a track until now anyway.

Who’s your favorite rapper?

Young M.A because she has changed the game and she is the most original person I know.

Let’s talk about basketball, how many years have you been playing?

6 solid years.

Wow, who taught you how to play?

I first started myself at the age of 11 then our school got us a coach, then we got to play. Then, later on, I developed the rest myself

Who’s your favorite basketball player?

Hands down it’s Nneka Ogwumike

Did you face any challenge in the area of graphics designing, basketball, and rapping? If you did, how did you deal with them?

In basketball, there are a lot of challenges. I don’t joke about the game because it’s something I see myself doing in the next 5 years as a full-time career. When I first started I was in an all-girls school so there weren’t many challenges. And I was natural at it so being the best was easy yo. But then I changed school s and I was the only girl who could play. I was kicked off the court for not being “Good enough” or because “I’m a girl I can’t be playing with boys”. Oh Lord, how that shit angered me. I saved up money bought a ball and some new gear and I worked hard to be better. And I did become better. Way better than I thought I would be.  I still do ball handling in my room every night before sleep. I got better than all those boys. Nothing pushes me to work harder more than anger. And nothing makes me angrier than sexist comments. Call one of those boys now I’ll school them anyway.

I have no fear in my rapping. Basically, it’s just art. I let it express myself. Just like Graphics design.

I think the only challenge in Graphic design is when your customers undervalue the prices. They think it’s easy but it’s not. My prices are not as high. And I hate it when I agree on prices with you and then when it’s time to pay up you’ll remove like 1k or 2k from the pay. That’s disrespectful. Someone did that to me, he pleaded that he didn’t have 1k to complete it and out of human compassion I said fine. Next thing I saw him like 20 mins later buying drinks and Pringles. Stop lying now lol.

How do you balance graphics designing, rapping, and basketball?

Basketball is a career to me so it’s at the top and after my studies, it’s my priority. Rapping is to express me. Rapping depends on my mood. Sometimes I stop everything I’m doing if some mad bars pop into my head. So basically it isn’t as complex to me. And I always plan myself. When I’m not on the court, I’m finishing some Graphic work to earn that money. When I’m not doing any of those I’m resting Lol.

Now that you know more about Aminu, take a look at some of the designs she has done:

This is my personal favorite

10 ways to deal with Low Self-Esteem

hey everyone! Welcome to my blog. I am going to be talking about how you can deal with low self-esteem, a lot of people deal with low self-esteem and because of this, they make bad decisions in order to build up their self-esteem and those decisions affect them later in the future. so that’s why I decided to share 10 ways you can deal with it. here they are:

  1. Start a compliment Jar

Many people probably think that this won’t work but they are wrong. for an entire month, write down something you like about yourself every single day, any compliment that’s truly positive counts. At the end of the month, go through your positive thoughts and reflect on them.

2. Start living for now.

Low self-esteem is often a problem of putting too much emphasis on things that can’t be changed or that are too far in the future to tell the outcome. Stop thinking these thoughts and live in the now.

3. Keep a Journal

I had a journal once, I wrote in it practically every day but then I stopped not because it wasn’t helping but because my aunt took it and read it LOL but basically when you write down your feelings, you get them out in a healthy way. Once you release them through quick and freeform writing. Close your journal for the day and don’t open it again until its time to write again. People think that having a journal is actually childish but I don’t think so.

4. Become Aware of your negativity

When you catch yourself being negative, actively acknowledge it. When you recognize your negativity, you give yourself the chance to respond with positivity. To be very honest I am a really negative person but I try my best to be positive and you should too.

5. Ask Yourself “IF…”.

“If someone else was in my position, would I make them feel negative?” Sometimes looking objectively at yourself and your situation can make you feel more positive.

6. Stop Judging Yourself And Others

Normally those with low self-esteem are also very negative in other areas of their life. If you find yourself criticizing others, STOP. Be more positive in all areas of your life.

7. Start Meditating.

Doing Something relaxing can help you become more positive about yourself. Try and let go of all your inner anxiety and breathe for 15 minutes a day or more. It works!

8. Have conversations with yourself.

This is not creepy at all! instead of you falling back on negative thoughts, start talking to yourself like an adult. Converse with yourself, ask yourself questions like why you are feeling the way you do? How can you make it better? sometimes I have conversations in my head and I start to laugh, people are always staring at me.

9. Learn To Let It All Go

Disconnecting from what’s making you anxious can sometimes be the best thing for you. When you have low self-esteem, learn not to put so much investment into what you’re upset by about yourself.

10. Be an active participant in your life.

Don’t be a backseat driver. When you let your emotions run your life. you aren’t truly in control. Start actively participating in your life to help develop a more positive attitude.

Well, that’s all on the 10 ways you can deal with low self-esteem. I hope you enjoyed what you just read. If you follow this steps I can assure you that you will beat low self-esteem. What makes you happy ?

Most of us today have planted different ideas of what makes us happy and these ideas have really stuck with us.The truth is when you can pinpoint what makes you happy you can add more of it to your life.

I had the opportunity to ask people about what makes them happy and this were their answers:

  • Onome said, “Money makes me happy when I have money I am happy”.
  • Nora said “Money of course”.
  • Nnaya said, “I am happy when the people I love are happy”.
  • Anthony said “Basketball, music and plantain”.
  • Aob said “Money”.
  • Simi said, “Money makes me happy”.
  • Sultan said, “I’m happy when people I love are happy and when I am doing what I love”.

looking at this answers, the majority believe that money is what makes them happy. In my opinion, money doesn’t give happiness it only adds to your level of happiness but it doesn’t cause it directly. I agree that, in some situations, money can make people happy, that’s if their happiness depends on material goods. Someone may have a lot of money and feel miserable for many reasons. I am not saying that money is not important. In our society, we need money to survive, but it can not be the focus of our lives. We all have our opinions.

A lot of things make me happy, but here are a few things i believe make me happy :

IMG_3776

Most of the things on my list can’t be gotten without money, food can’t be gotten without money, you can’t travel without money, you also can’t shop without money. So I guess in a way money brings happiness.

Do more of what makes you happy to be happy.

Olasubomi Disu

Olasubomi Adebayo Disu also known as Subomi the photographer is one of the young photographers and writers in Nigeria. After looking at his work I had to interview him.

INTERVIEW
When did you start photography and what inspired you?

IMG-20170109-WA0026

I started photography in 2014 and I was inspired by the fact that immediate sets before me always had a photographer in their midst, so I decided to be that photographer in my set. Then I also had an older friend (tse) that was into photography, his works motivated me.

What do you love about photography and writing?

Generally, I love the deep things of life, the good and the bad I don’t write often but when I do I try my best to communicate my thoughts, for photography I love graphics, I love creativity, putting things together, something different and deep.

Did you have setbacks and how did you pull through?

Yeah, I did, I started with a ‘semi-pro’ camera, I used it for two years before getting a professional one. I was in my last year in high school so I didn’t really have the time to be creative with my pictures. So it just attracted criticism, but I’m that type of person that gets motivated by criticism, especially the ones that aren’t constructive.

How do you deal with critics?

I set high standards for myself, I thoroughly assess my work before I decide to release it to the public, it helps reduce the number of critics.

Do you have anything to say to upcoming photographers out there?

Be exceptional, be creative, diversity is key.

Take a look at the self-discovery series by subomi disu

IMG-20170109-WA0029

Self-discovery (1/3)

People still stuck in quandary. Indecisive as to who they want to be in life. And some are forced by their parents to spend more than 20 years trying to be who they aren’t. Parents picking their future career for them all in the name of flaunting that their child as one of the top professionals in the country, neglecting the child’s ability and happiness. Growing up to wallow in self-pity for choosing a career they don’t love. Regret is a prodigious feeling. An emotion intertwined with depression. Don’t let yourself be another soul roaming around the crust of the earth, find yourself. Find what you love. Follow that which you love. Get the knowledge you need in what you love doing and wealth would follow. Your happiness should be your priority.

IMG-20170109-WA0027

Self-discovery series (2/3)

That moment you realize what you’ve been working on isn’t what you love, use both feet, hit the brakes, and set free. Retrace your steps and ask yourself ‘who am I?’

These words may seem little but within holds a lot of related questions complex to the average human understanding. You see, that moment you keep pondering on this question, I pray. you discover what you love. Cause what you love defines who you are, it brings out the passion in you, that passion like no other. When you finally find your true self, teach yourself how to be the best at it or find someone else better than you to lead you to the right path. The only limitation to finding yourself is you, the people who made a difference in this world are those who weren’t scared of taking risks. Don’t be scared to pursue what you love. Always set goals, strive to get better. Not necessarily better than others but better than who you were a day ago. On your road to discovery, I hope you find what you seek. The ball is in your court; it has always been. Discover yourself

IMG-20170109-WA0036

Self-discovery (Finale)

I guess it’s time to round up. There would be a point in your life where the extent of your abilities would come as a shock to you. When you look in the mirror, do you see someone in you greater than you could ever imagine? If you do, I applaud you for that. If you don’t start believing in yourself, you would hardly find people who would. Pick yourself, dust yourself up, and invest in yourself. Invest your time and all other resources in yourself. And finally, your dreams would become reality. Become your own king.

Discover yourself.

Think Big!

Hey guys so the new year is so close and i had the idea of talking about thinking bigger than what you set your mind to.Most people limit themselves to a particular area they set for themselves in life and because of that they keep revolving round the limit they set for themselves.

How can we break through the limitations we’ve set for ourselves?

Sometimes we assign the role of the ‘Big Thinker’ to some people, but we don’t necessarily see ourselves in that role and that is because negative peers and colleagues tell you why something will never work, or your own internalized voice, telling you the same thing. But if you want to overcome this habit you have to let go of your self-limitations and give new things a try. Here are four steps you can use to expand your horizon:

Get Comfortable with Discomfort: this is all about taking risks, you don’t like something but you know that one way or another it can help improve your goals, the only way to know for sure is by taking the risk.

Set the Right Kind of Goals:  Some believe that “thinking big” means you should set wildly ambitious stretch goals to inspire yourself to greater heights but i believe that we sometimes set unrealistic goals for ourselves, and as a result, we’re miserable. Don’t set yourself up for disappointment by setting ambiguously huge goals, set a goal that is attainable.

Find supportive friends: Having a strong, positive network is crucial, having people around you that inspire you, support you and are ready to help you, not friends that say yes to every idea you bring to the table.Often, when we’re asking people to support us, we’re just asking for approval. But if we’re looking for results, we have to be comfortable with the feedback of people asking us to think bigger and try harder. If you’re really looking for people to push you, you want them to say, ‘That’s great and I think you could improve this’.

Become the Person Others Want to Help: Other people determine whether or not we’re successful. Thinking big requires understanding that the biggest and most meaningful projects simply can’t be accomplished on your own. Other people are going to open the doors and spread your messages. So how can you get others involved and inspired to help?  You make commitments and fulfill them, you learn in action, and you deal with your voice of judgment without being critical of others.

I hope you learnt a lot from this post, don’t forget to subscribe by clicking the follow button. Happy new year in advance!

Be Yourself !

“Waking up to who you are required letting go of who you imagine yourself to be”- Alan Watts

Don’t try to be someone else, be yourself, be secure with yourself and trust your own decisions. Self-love is one of the greatest attributes a person can have, without this attribute you are left vulnerable to the outside world which makes it easy for people to push you around and this leads to your downfall. I have seen situations where people find it really hard to be themselves all because they “want to belong” and that’s wrong, you don’t have to change to belong.

I was once shy and reclusive but I wasn’t being myself, whenever I noticed myself getting attached to the labels that people kept in my head it was a big challenge because I cared so much about being accepted by others so I would ask myself,”how would I act right now if I had no cares of what others thought of me?” I realized that who I am naturally without anything else added is perfectly okay.

The truth is when you begin to question who you are, you lose confidence in yourself because you have the mentality that you are not good enough for people to see and you try your best to fix yourself when initially there was nothing wrong with you and in the process of fixing yourself, you become something that the people that never paid attention to you in the first place can mock and bully with their words. Don’t change for anyone, don’t change your character, your attitude and behavior. You are perfect the way you are!

Thank you for reading!

How to get over a breakup.

A while back I watched a close friend of mine go through a breakup, and it was really sad, she was having a hard time getting over it, so I was inspired to give some simple tips on how to get over a breakup

1. Either block or unfriend him, because that will be the death of you. Most people might find this really childish but it’s actually better if you block him from all parts of your life if you don’t you just keep on remembering what went down between the both of you especially when you see a picture or a video of him. nobody wants to remember their ex after they are over.

2. Don’t immediately suggest to “stay friends” — and if he does, tell him you need to think about it. This is an impulse because you don’t want to seem like you care too much about the breakup. Because you’re so chill. But truthfully, during this awkward breaking-up period, it’s hard to tell whether you’ll be able to be friends or not. Generally, one person wants to be friends and the other wants to be more. Gotta work that shit out before it can be a healthy friendship … if it ever can be. You’re not admitting defeat by not staying friends with him.

3. Spend a lot of time outside. It’s a cliché, but fresh air really does clear your head. So does, you know, seeing the sun every once in a while. Take at least two hours from each day just to leave your Comfort zone and interact with The Outside world.

4. If you start dating someone else, take it really slow. Dude. You just ended a relationship and your heart flipped over and exploded like a tanker. I know most girls/guys of nowadays have zero chills, they go through a break up the previous week and the next week they are in new relationships. If you take it step by step and enjoy it as a casual thing for a while, that’ll give you some time to evaluate whether you’re actually ready to be with someone again.

5. Reach out to people, and tell them exactly what you need. You might feel like nobody will understand, or be afraid of becoming that depressed girl who can’t hold a conversation without crumbling. But we’ve all crumbled. Most people shy away from offering help only because they don’t know what you need, and they don’t feel adequate. People will surprise you with their support if you give them the chance. Be as specific about what you need as you can. “Hi, I’m sad and I need someone to listen,” is always a good place to start.

6. It feels like you’re dying, and in some ways you are. Let yourself die because dying is the only way you can be reborn. A breakup is a chance to be reborn. Give it purpose by allowing yourself to be remade. Ask yourself tough questions and feel through the answers. Who have you been up until now? Who are you really? What are you ready to let go of, and what does your heart most desire? Let this breakup propel you into Becoming yourself, more fully. You can forge something authentic and beautiful out of this pain. That way, when all the hurt has cleared, you’ll be able to look back with gratitude and pride and say “that made me who I am today.”

well, thats all I can tell you about how you can easily get over a breakup, if you are going through one just follow this steps and I am sure it will help, you can also send me an email – laminaprecious4@gmail.com. Thanks for reading!

I’ve had setbacks like every other person, The two major setbacks being Academic and financial setbacks.
